A Letter to the Reader of This Blog

Dear readers,

Many of the people that have read this blog know why I'm keeping a blog. If you have no clue why I'm keeping it, then you obviously are just doing this for some sort of entertainment or to cure your own boredom. If this is the case, then you obviously really don't care about the blog that I'm keeping, SO GO AWAY! now for those of you who actually do care to read my blog entries,I really don't care which ones you do or don't read. I haven't typed any blogs of which I wish to keep you from reading or else I wouldn't have typed them. Now, for those of you who want to know what intrigues me about writing or why I write the things that I do, read the following. The thing that intrigues me about writing, is the fact that there's no limit of what you can come up with. The contents of the stories that I've created over the course of my life were based off of how much I actually chose to write, not what I was limited to. My philosophy about writing is that if you have too many good ideas for a story, and you can't decide which one you want to write about, use them all. Find a way to tie all of your ideas into your story. Or, write them down and save the ideas for other stories. Don't keep too many story ideas put back though, or else you'll get confused and lose them. The things that interest me as a writer, are fantasy type things because there is no fine line between reality and what you create. With a fantasy based story, you can write about almost anything. As a writer, I plan to keep my ideas alive and never give up on them. By doing this, I will be able to be successful in my possible career as a writer and even improve my talents and ideas. If you are reading this and have read any of my non famous works just by chance, the be sure to look for more and even greater ideas for stories. Any new ideas would also be considered.

To Be Alone

There are many people that like to be alone during at least some point during their day. I like to be alone more than i like to be surrounded by people. I prefer to just retreat to my room when there is a pressing matter on my mind or if something or someone is bothering me. When I want to be alone, I like to just retreat to my nice quiet room, turn on my computer, listen to music, and either get on the internet and mess around or play playstation 2. My room is the smallest room in the house and is probably the most effected by the weather outside the house. Even though the temperature in my room can be unbearably hot in the summer and bitter cold in the winter, it is a place where I can actually think and just have time to myself to be alone. What makes me feel relaxed about my room, is that it's the most isolated room in the house and is furthest away from the living room. This is where I retreat when I need time to be alone.

Blog entry number 12
Spontaneous writing booth

If someone came to me with a dollar and asked me to type a short story for them, they would probably tell me to type about anything that came to my mind. I can come up with some great stories when I actually put my mind to it. Over the last 15 years of my life, I have come up with some strange but creative ideas. When I was in sixth grade, it was a requirement that all of the students come up with at least some form of a story to be entered in the competition. I decided to do a story based off of a television show that I had seen a lot. When I first started to create my imaginative tale, I had trouble with writers block. My teacher told me that it was a good sign because most of the great writers of our time have writers block before coming up with a masterpiece. I took her advice and didn't let the block get to me. I continued to brainstorm and finally worked my way around it. When I had overcome my writers block, I just came up with ideas that were perfect for my story. When the stream of ideas stopped flowing to my mind, I wrapped up my story and had a 10 chapter 17 page work of art in front of me. It took me a whole three days to come up with the rough draft of that story. It then took me another two days of editing and two more days to type the final copy. I was both shocked and crushed when they announced the classroom winners. My story was not one of the final two stories. I then asked my teacher if she knew where my story had placed in the class. She then told me that it was a close competition between the top two stories and mine. She told me that my story had come in a close third. She then advised me to work on a sequel to it anyway even though I said that I would only do it if I won. I am still currently working on this story.

Blog entry number 11:
My bedroom

My bedroom is actually kind of messy. I have many things in my room. I recently got new carpet. Because of this new addition to my already rather cluttered room, I have all of my stuff packed into bags ready to be put away when I get new furniture. I currently have very little space in my room. There is only one small space in the middle of my floor where I can actually walk. Against one wall are all of my belongings. I also have two ferrets and a turtle tank in my room. Along another wall, is my dresser. Against the third wall is my bed and my end table that has my T.V and my playstation on it. Against the final wall in my room is my closet and my door. In my room i have many things like my computer and my TV and some games and some books. I don't read very much during the spring and summer, but I do catch up on all of my reading in the summer time. In my room you would also find some odd things like puzzles and shoes and sports equipment. On top of my computer tower, you would normally find my leather jacket and my basketball shoes, sitting on top of the box that they came in. In my closet you would find many of the board games that I never play, some puzzles and some mind games that involve a high level of critical thinking.

Blog Entry Number 10:
Lyrical Lines

I listen to all different kinds of music. There are however certain songs that I like. The music that I listen to is a wide variety. Mainly I listen to metal or hip hop. My favorite metal band is Disturbed. If I had to pick a favorite song, I would probably have to pick the song Got Money by Lil Wayne. I like the lyrics of the song because it goes perfectly with my MySpace and it also describes me perfectly. For example, the background of my MySpace is raining money. The chorus of the song goes like this, "Cause I, got money, and you know it, take it out your pocket and show it, then throw it." I like just listening to the song when i am bored or even angry. I like the way the song goes and how it sounds. For some reason, it just seems to calm me down and relax me. When I listen to this song, I just feel like I am alone and by myself for a little while. It just makes me feel like I'm in my own little world and there isn't anyone telling me what to do or asking me to do something. It is very rare for me to get any time by myself. When I actually do manage to get a little alone time, I like to lie in my room and listen to my music while playing a game on the internet or my playstation 2. I especially like to listen to this song. That is why it is my favorite song.

Blog entry number 9:

What is love anyway

I think that when Irwin Federman says that people love others not for who they are but for how they make them feel, I think that he speaks the truth to a certain point. I think that people love others for multiple reasons. Some people do go by that but most go by both of those facts. There are even some people out there who go by looks. I think that if you find someone who you really like but you don't know enough about them, then you should get to know them better. If you feel that you already know enough about them, but you don't like the way they look, then you should consider seeing other people. If you like the way a person looks but don't like the way they make you feel, then you probably shouldn't see that person. If you don't like a person for who they are but how they make you feel, then you should make them aware of your concerns. If you like them for who they are but they make you feel terrible, then you should probably avoid that person. For example, my girlfriend and i get along just fine. We both like each other for the way we make each other feel and each for who we are. I am always able to make her laugh and she is always able to cheer me up when I am depressed or under a lot of stress.
We both have a great chemistry and we love each other very much. That is why I say to an extent.

Just by looking

Now, I am not someone who usually judges a person by what they look like. There are some exceptions however. If there are certain looks about a person that makes you weary, then you should observe who they hang out with and what they do on a daily basis. Some people say that you can tell a lot about a person just by what they look like. I however, disagree. I think that if there is a certain person who catches your eye in either a good or a bad way, then you should take the time to observe who they hang out with and what they do with those friends during school or maybe even after school. After you have maybe learned a little more about them or even have a strong reason to judge what kind of person they are, you should take the time to talk to them and maybe get to know them a little better. If after talking to them, you find out that they are actually a goodhearted person, then you should maybe consider hanging out with them and their friends. If you find out that they are a terrible person, then you should probably be cautious of them and their friends. If you still are not sure about them, then you should maybe consider meeting their friends to find out more about them. By doing this, you could possibly have one or more new friends. It would probably benefit you and them.

Time traveler

If I could chose to go back to any time period I would chose to go back to the mid 1960s. I would go back to that time period so I could see what life was like back then. The first place that I would probably go was to St. Elmo where my grandpa and his brother grew up. I was never able to meet my uncle. His name first name was James, which is how my middle name was determined. I have only seen pictures of him but from what I could tell he was a great guy. He and my grandpa were really close from what I could tell from the pictures. They did almost everything together by the looks of it. I have seen pictures of him and my grandpa having a good time together. In one of the pictures, they were attempting to call the president. I would really enjoy getting the chance to actually see my uncle. I would enjoy the chance to get to know him. If I went back to that time period to meet my uncle, I would also get to see my grandpa when he was much younger. That is my reasoning behind going back to the mid 1960s.

Another time period that I would also like to travel back too would be the year 1998. My grandma died from cancer in February of 2000. The doctors thought that she had been living with the cancer for two years. That is how it was explained to me however. If I went back to 1998 I might’ve been able to figure something out about it and maybe even do something about the situation. I think that it is very possible that I would’ve been able to save my grandmas life. If so then I might possibly have her and my grandpa still today.

Stranded

If I went on a hiking trip with some friends, I don’t think that I would somehow manage to separate myself from them. If I did manage to achieve that level of stupidity however, the first thing that I would do is think about where I had been. I would think about all of the possible places that I could have separated from the rest of the group. I would then think about a possible idea for their destination. I would instantly think of some of the place that they could have stopped to rest or take a break of some sort. I would then think about where our means of transportation was located. I would then think about where the nearest and largest path or trail was situated. I am the type of person who would only take my phone and bring some food and water. I would also make sure that I had a couple of Gatorade's and at least two energy drinks with me. From my years of experience with endurance running, I would definitely be able to make a long hike. I would then try to contact one of the members of my group to find out where they were at and set up a meeting point. If I could not get a hold of at least one of them, then I would start walking and leave some sort of trail to know where I’ve been and leave some type of note to tell my friends where I was at if they happened to come across my trail. I would also be sure to count the number of how many steps I took in each direction and record it in some way. I would also retrace my steps a little bit. I would then continually repeat this process until I was in some way reunited with my group.

Blog entry 5
The perfect day

Everyone dreams about a perfect day where everything went their way. Just think, if you had one day without your parents telling you what to do, and you got to just lay around your room all day and talk to friends on the Internet, phone, and e-mail all day. You could play video games on the computer and play playstation or Xbox whenever you wanted. You wouldn’t have to worry about anyone ruining your plans. Those are just some of the things that I would do to start off my day.

Normally on the weekends I sleep until about nine or ten o’clock in the morning. Then I wake up and get something to drink and go back to my room. When I go back to my room, I normally watch a movie, play a game of football on madden 07, which I am unbeatable at, or I get on the internet. This is where my day normally starts to go downhill. By this time my parents are up and hollering at me to let the dogs outside to go to the bathroom. After i do this, they normally have a list of other things for me to do. This is where i would change things up a bit and get my perfect day started. The first thing that i would love to change about my daily routine is the fact that there is a list of work to be done. That list would be passed on to my parents. I would love to be able to just lay back in my bedroom and just dominate every team on madden that was brave enough to oppose me. I am soon getting an internet connection for my playstation 2 so I can play people all around the world. That would be my perfect day.

Reality TV

Reality TV shows are a great thing. I would love to design one some day. I would make mine a comical reality TV show. It would be called Clash of the Comedians. The idea of the show would be to have a ladder of comedians. Two comedians would be chosen at random to start out with. After that the other comedians that are going to be featured on the show would randomly draw a number. There would be two different brackets of comedians. Each show would be an hour long. Two comedians from each bracket would go head to head. The winner from the battle would go on to the next round. The loser would be put on the losers’ bracket. Each comedian will attempt to make the crowd out laugh the other comedian’s jokes with their own. As the crowd laughs, the amount of noise will be recorded on a meter above the comedian’s heads they will be unable to see this meter. Which ever comedian made the meter go the highest will be declared the winner. After a winner is declared on each side of the winners’ bracket, the two losers will go head to head. The winner will move on to the next round on the losers’ bracket and the winner will go home. It will continue like this until round one is completed on both winners’ brackets and the losers’ bracket. Then it will continue by round after that. When there is only one person left on both of the winners’ brackets, those two will go head to head. When there are only two people left on the losers’ bracket, those two will go head to head. The final person left on the losers’ bracket will get one last chance to face the final person left on the winners’ bracket. The winner of this finale will get one hundred thousand dollars.

Super powers

I wish I was a super hero. If I was a super hero and I could have any super power that I wanted I would probably choose the power of being telekinetic. I think that it would be really awesome to be able to control things at will with my mind. If I was telekinetic I would also be psychic. Then I could also see the future and what was going to happen. I could tell how my day is going to go. If I was able to control things just with my mind that means I would not have to use the remote to turn the channel. I would not have to use the controller for a video game. I would also be able to do my homework without writing any thing and I would always get the answers right. I would be able to pass all of my classes with an A. if I had an A in all of my classes then I would not have to listen to my parents gripe at me. If I was telekinetic I would also be able to read and control minds. If I was able to do that then I would be able to control what was cooked for a meal everyday and I could also stop the teachers from giving us any homework. I could also tell people what to do without them knowing it. I would be able to control my entire life. After reading my reasoning I bet that most people would love to be telekinetic and control their lives.

Money matters

There have been many things that I have spent money on this summer. Most of that money was money that I had earned with my own two hands. I had many ideas about what I wanted to get or earn this summer. I had to come up with some ideas to narrow down items on my birthday list. The best thing that I have spent money on this summer would probably be more memory for my computer. My computer has about four times as much memory as it did when we brought it home. My computer is much faster now. Now that my computer is faster, it helps me to do my school work. My computer doesn’t freeze up as much anymore and it doesn’t lock up. I also am able to get on the internet with my wireless connector. I can get on to my moms internet, my neighbors internet, and one other internet source somewhere in my local area. I can stay connected with my friends and keep myself entertained when I am not working, or when I have nothing else to do. I don’t really have a worst decision about what I spent my money on. I worked really hard for things that I really wanted to get even if it meant making the money for it by working. I did what ever it took to earn most of the money that I spent on myself or my friends and family this summer.

About me

My name is Nick Garland. I’m 14 years old. I will turn 15 on November 24th of this year. I am a freshman at Olympia high school. I’m going to be keeping a blog in my English 1/ writing class for the entire first semester of my freshman year. I hope that you enjoy reading my entries. There will be a new one each week.

I’m somewhere between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall. I have glasses to help my nearsightedness. I have short light brown hair and blue eyes. I have broad and stocky shoulders. I have long and muscular arms and legs.

My personality is like most peoples, it varies by day. If I’m having a bad day, I can sometimes have an attitude towards everybody. If I’m having a stressful day, I can be easily angered. When I am having these kinds of days I just like to be left alone. Most of the time however, I am easy going and a fun person to be around. I show respect to everybody that shows me a little respect. I don’t expect to get much respect unless I earn it though.

Some of my likes are sports, reading, video games, and playing around on the internet. I ran cross country in 7th and 8th grade. I also ran track in 7th and 8th grade. I intend to run track again this year and I also intend to try out for the basketball team.
